marfa, texas

this seems to be the only photo i took when we were in downtown marfa. they don't have too much going on, but they do have a nice little coffee shop/bookstore, the pizza foundation, art galleries (an andy warhol show was up when we were there - the last supper series), the paisano (the hotel where james dean stayed during the filming of giant), and a goodwill where i bought a used copy of rhythm nation and a buck owens best-of compilation.

prada marfa

courtney and i visited marfa, texas on the way back from el paso (may 2006). the prada marfa art installation is located just west of marfa, on state road 90. i wasn't sure what to think about it, and i'll spare you my social commentary, but it was compelling nonetheless. we actually passed it the first time - i didn't know it was there - and had to turn around to see it.

that's courtney in front of prada marfa, and my rental car reflected in the window.

hell paso

i went to el paso in may of 2006 for the society of southwest archivists annual meeting. i drank a lot with courtney, evan and mat, which ended up being the highlight of my time in el paso. this photo really sums up my feelings about el paso.

the hotel had a tiffany stained glass window in the bar, which was neat, but was overall unexciting. we went to juarez for a reception (that, by the way, had amazing botanas, including one made with a corn fungus. not really sure how the dish was made with the corn fungus, but it was delish.), which was fun until we headed home and had to wait in a line for several hours. when i went through the border guard thingy, the agent asked me if i had anything to declare, and while i said "no" what i thought was "i declare that i never want to return to juarez."

courtney and i drove out to el paso, which was great fun. we listened to lots of music, including the scissor sisters and the pharcyde. on the way back, we spent the afternoon in marfa, texas and the night in ft. davis, texas. photos ensue.

traci travels

yeah, i haven't blogged on this site for a year and a half, and i have decided that it will be a travel blog in general. i still have stuff from my paris trip to blog about (i know, lame, but i just haven't gotten around to it, you know?), but you will find tidbits from my other trips here as well.

that's all, really.
